Projective geometry

7 lives in this collection worked in projective geometry, from 290 to today. Each has a full course on their life and the mathematics and physics they made.

Often together with: astronomy, combinatorics. All fields

  • Pappus of Alexandria290–350

Alexandrian geometer whose Mathematical Collection preserved much of Greek geometry and contains the hexagon theorem, the cross-ratio lemma and the centroid rule for solids of revolution.

    geometry, projective geometry, mechanics

  • Girard Desargues1591–1661

Lyon engineer and architect whose 1639 Brouillon project on conics founded projective geometry and whose theorem on perspective triangles underlies the foundations of geometry.

    projective geometry, perspective, architecture

  • Blaise Pascal1623–1662

Mathematician, physicist and writer who proved the hexagram theorem, built the Pascaline, established atmospheric pressure, co-founded probability theory with Fermat, and wrote the Provincial Letters and Pensées.

    projective geometry, probability theory, combinatorics

  • Jean-Victor Poncelet1788–1867

Engineer officer who founded modern projective geometry with his 1822 Traité and made work the central concept of the mechanics of machines.

projective geometry, applied mechanics, hydraulic engineering

  • August Ferdinand Möbius1790–1868

Leipzig astronomer and geometer who introduced barycentric and homogeneous coordinates, the Möbius function and Möbius transformations, and described the one-sided Möbius band.

    projective geometry, astronomy, topology

  • Michel Chasles1793–1880

French geometer and historian who systematised projective geometry around the cross-ratio, proved the screw theorem for rigid motions, founded enumerative geometry with the number 3264, and was the victim of the Vrain-Lucas forgeries.

    projective geometry, enumerative geometry, kinematics

  • Jakob Steiner1796–1863

Self-taught Swiss geometer who became the leading synthetic geometer of the nineteenth century, known for the projective generation of conics, symmetrization, Steiner chains and Steiner systems.
