Building Mountains

Orogeny—the process of mountain building—results from the convergence and collision of tectonic plates. Crustal thickening, folding, thrust faulting, and metamorphism produce the great mountain belts. Isostatic adjustment and lithospheric flexure control topographic evolution and the formation of foreland basins flanking the orogen.
