Applied mechanics

3 lives in this collection worked in applied mechanics, from 1736 to today. Each has a full course on their life and the mathematics and physics they made.

Often together with: elasticity. All fields

  • Charles-Augustin de Coulomb1736–1806

French military engineer and physicist who measured the inverse-square law of electric force with his torsion balance and founded the classical laws of friction and earth pressure.

    electrostatics, magnetism, applied mechanics

  • Claude-Louis Navier1785–1836

French engineer who first wrote down the general equations of elastic solids (1821) and of viscous fluids (1822), the latter now called the Navier–Stokes equations.

    fluid mechanics, elasticity, structural engineering

  • Jean-Victor Poncelet1788–1867

Engineer officer who founded modern projective geometry with his 1822 Traité and made work the central concept of the mechanics of machines.

projective geometry, applied mechanics, hydraulic engineering
