Elasticity

11 lives in this collection worked in elasticity, from 1635 to today. Each has a full course on their life and the mathematics and physics they made.

Often together with: optics, mathematical physics, applied mechanics, astronomy, electrostatics, experimental physics. All fields

  • Robert Hooke1635–1703

English experimental philosopher, the Royal Society's first Curator of Experiments, author of Micrographia and of the law of elasticity, and an architect of London's rebuilding after the Great Fire.

    experimental physics, elasticity, microscopy

  • Charles-Augustin de Coulomb1736–1806

French military engineer and physicist who measured the inverse-square law of electric force with his torsion balance and founded the classical laws of friction and earth pressure.

  • Claude-Louis Navier1785–1836

French engineer who first wrote down the general equations of elastic solids (1821) and of viscous fluids (1822), the latter now called the Navier–Stokes equations.
