Fluid mechanics

6 lives in this collection worked in fluid mechanics, from 1700 to today. Each has a full course on their life and the mathematics and physics they made.

Often together with: turbulence, solid mechanics. All fields

  • Daniel Bernoulli1700–1782

Basel physician and mathematical physicist who wrote Hydrodynamica, founded the kinetic theory of gases, introduced expected utility and built the first epidemic model.

fluid mechanics, kinetic theory, vibrations and acoustics

  • Claude-Louis Navier1785–1836

French engineer who first wrote down the general equations of elastic solids (1821) and of viscous fluids (1822), the latter now called the Navier–Stokes equations.

    fluid mechanics, elasticity, structural engineering

  • Osborne Reynolds1842–1912

Manchester's first professor of engineering, who discovered the criterion for turbulence in pipes and founded lubrication theory and the averaged equations of turbulent flow.

    fluid mechanics, engineering, heat transfer

  • Ludwig Prandtl1875–1953

Founder of boundary-layer theory and of modern aerodynamics, who built the Göttingen school of fluid mechanics and served the Nazi air ministry.

    fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, boundary-layer theory

  • Theodore von Kármán1881–1963

Hungarian-American aerodynamicist of the vortex street, the momentum integral and turbulence theory, who founded the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and shaped US and NATO aeronautical research.

    aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, turbulence

  • G. I. Taylor1886–1975

Cambridge physicist who founded the statistical theory of turbulence and the dislocation theory of plasticity, and whose name attaches to Taylor vortices, Taylor dispersion, the Rayleigh–Taylor instability and the Taylor cone.

    fluid mechanics, turbulence, hydrodynamic stability
