Graduate Research Course

Polar Penguin Biophysics

From the emperor’s 4-month fast to the individual voice in a 10 000-bird colony — Sphenisciformes at −60 °C, in turbulent huddles, and underwater to 565 m.

About This Course

Penguins are flightless seabirds that converged on a marine-predator niche once occupied by reptiles. An emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) endures −60 °C winds with an 85 % operative radiant efficiency coat, fasts for 120 dayswhile incubating an egg on its feet, and dives to 565 m after fish — deeper than nuclear-submarine crush depth. This course treats penguin biophysics, bioacoustics, diving physiology, feather microengineering, and colony-level self-organization.
