The mantle convects on geological timescales, driven by internal heat from radioactive decay and primordial accretion. This slow, creeping flow generates the forces that move tectonic plates—ridge push, slab pull, and basal drag—while plumes from the deep mantle create hotspot volcanism at the surface.
